Black & Green (2006) is a video loop/software piece that memorializes those who have died from improvised explosive devices (IED) during the current Iraq War. The loop is primarily comprised of text that includes each name, rank, military branch, division/battalion/company, place of death, hometown, home state, and the cause of death that never changes. The loop begins with the earliest death by an IED leading to the most current. With the change of each name there is an audible explosion that accompanies it.
Black & Green was created by parsing data from the iCasualties.org database. This data was then assembled by an application that I wrote to generate the visuals that comprise Black & Green. You may view the piece in its application form here (requires java). This current version reflects all available data as of November 2006.
